About
I am an Assistant Professor of History at California State University, Fullerton where I teach classes related to US foreign relations and global history. I received my Ph.D. and M.A. in History from Rutgers University. My current research focus is on non-governmental US foreign relations with Africa in the 20th century. I am particularly interested in the long history of US human rights and development policy in Africa and its influence on policies today. I was an Africanist Doctoral fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and have received numerous other grants in support of my research and writing from foundations and organizations in the United States and Portugal. I am currently revising my dissertation about human rights, Protestant missionaries, and US foreign relations with Angola. Fieldwork for my project was conducted in both Portuguese and English in Angola, South Africa, Portugal, Switzerland, and the United States.
In addition to my dissertation work, I am a Subject Specialist for the JSTOR project "Struggles for Freedom in Southern Africa," which is digitizing archival holdings from around the world related to the anti-colonial battles fought throughout Southern Africa from 1950-1991.
I am highly proficient in Portuguese and Spanish and can read and communicate in French.
